Leadership Practices Sort

Distill strategic objectives into the shared leadership practices most needed to create coordinated action, performance, and organizational health.

How This Works

This tool helps you connect strategic objectives to the leadership practices that matter most right now. Complete the sections in order; your responses will generate a brief PDF summary and support a follow-up debrief.

1. Identify the focus

Enter who is responding and the team or function you are considering.

2. Frame the demand

List key objectives and score their impact, urgency, and complexity.

3. Force the priorities

Sort all 28 practices into Critical Now, Second Order, or Lower Priority.

4. Submit the report

Email yourself a PDF summary. The deeper interpretation happens in the debrief.

1. Respondent and Focus

2. Strategic Objectives

Enter the objectives from the strategic plan. Score each one for impact, urgency, and leadership complexity, then use the highest-demand objectives to guide the practice sort.

Impact

How much this objective matters to results, customer or stakeholder value, risk, strategic position, or organizational health.

Urgency

How soon leadership action needs to improve for the objective to stay on track.

Complexity

How much success depends on uncertain work, cross-boundary coordination, real tradeoffs, changing conditions, or no obvious playbook.

Leadership Demand = Impact + Urgency + Complexity, using Low = 1, Medium = 2, High = 3.

3. Forced Practice Sort

Sort every practice into exactly one stack. Drag cards into a stack, move them between stacks, or drag them back to the Practice Library if you want to reconsider. You can also use the buttons on each card. The limits are intentional: they force tradeoffs so the final report can distinguish the most significant priorities from second-order and lower-priority practices.

Critical Now: 6 cards

The practices most essential to delivering the strategic objectives in this time horizon.

Second Order: 8 cards

Practices that matter, but are not the first constraint on performance right now.

Lower Priority: 14 cards

Practices that are useful generally, but less central to the current business challenge.
